On 24 October, the campaign joins the celebration, while Bologna prepares to welcome visitors and creators for a special anniversary edition

ROMA, ITALY, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On 24 October, The EU Fab 6 – Savour the PDO and PGI Wines and Deli Meats from Europe celebrates Mortadella Day, the annual occasion dedicated to Mortadella Bologna PGI and to the history and identity behind one of Europe’s most recognisable protected deli meats.

This year’s celebration carries particular significance. Mortadella Bologna PGI marks 365 years since 24 October 1661, when Cardinal Farnese issued an edict in Bologna establishing some of the earliest rules governing its production. The anniversary coincides with another important milestone: the 25th anniversary of the Consorzio Italiano Tutela Mortadella Bologna, which has worked since 2001 to protect, promote and enhance the product and its craftmanship.

For The EU Fab 6, Mortadella Day is an opportunity to highlight the role of the PGI quality scheme, which links Mortadella Bologna PGI to a defined production tradition and guarantees compliance with specific standards. The product has become known far beyond its place of origin, while continuing to retain a strong connection with Bologna and its gastronomic heritage.

Those wishing to celebrate Mortadella Day in person can join the event at Palazzo Re Enzo, in the heart of Bologna, with free admission and no entry fee. The programme includes a showcooking with Bologna-based chef Max Poggi and Daniele Reponi, historical re-enactments dedicated to the history of Mortadella Bologna PGI, tastings and an exhibition devoted to the 365th anniversary of the 1661 edict. The event will also welcome creators involved in The EU Fab 6 campaign, who will take part in a special treasure hunt through Bologna dedicated to discovering the city and the story of its “pink queen”.

“Mortadella Day is an opportunity to celebrate a product that has been part of our gastronomic heritage for centuries, but also to show how contemporary and internationally appreciated Mortadella Bologna PGI remains today,” says Gianluigi Ligasacchi, Director of the Consorzio Italiano Tutela Mortadella Bologna. “This year has a particularly special meaning, as we celebrate both 365 years since the historic 1661 edict and 25 years of the Consorzio. It is a moment to look back at a remarkable history, but also to continue bringing Mortadella Bologna PGI to new generations of consumers.”

The EU Fab 6 continues to bring European PDO and PGI products closer to consumers, media and operators in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, combining information about origin and certification with contemporary ways of discovering and enjoying Europe’s food heritage

Co-financed by the European Union, “The EU Fab 6 – Savour the PDO and PGI Wines and Deli Meats from Europe” campaign promotes European excellence in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Through tastings, education, and promotional events, the campaign supports the visibility and appreciation of products marked with the PDO and PGI labels.

The initiative is supported by six prestigious consortia:
• Consorzio Italiano Tutela Mortadella Bologna (Italy) – project leader
•  Consorzio Cacciatore Italiano (Italy)
• Consorzio Zampone e Cotechino Modena PGI (Italy)
