Italian Gaza Flotilla Activists Accuse Israel of Abduction, Ill-Treatment

(MENAFN) Activists from Italy who participated in a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza said Wednesday that they were subjected to what they described as torture and mistreatment after an interception by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean last month, according to reports.

Speaking at a press conference in Rome, Antonio La Piccirella, a participant in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s 2026 Spring Mission, said the Israeli military response to the mission was significantly more forceful than in previous attempts to deliver aid.

“This time, the Israeli army responded to the flotilla much more violently" than in past humanitarian efforts, Antonio La Piccirella, who took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s 2026 Spring Mission, told a press conference in Rome.

He claimed that there were two separate incidents involving the flotilla, including one in waters between Italy and Greece, during which two activists were allegedly taken and held, which he said amounted to violations of international law. A second intervention, he added, occurred in daylight and reportedly lasted around a day and a half.

La Piccirella also alleged that significant resources were allocated to public messaging efforts aimed at discrediting flotilla missions and shaping international opinion, claiming large-scale spending on such campaigns.

He said this included efforts he described as disinformation designed to build supportive sentiment toward Israel in Europe and the United States.

Despite the allegations, he emphasized that activists involved in the flotilla movement intend to continue future missions focused on challenging the maritime blockade on Gaza and delivering humanitarian assistance.

He added that strategies may evolve over time but reaffirmed continued engagement in such operations.
