Italy Says Not to Participate in Trump's Peace Board

(MENAFN) Italy will not participate in US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed Wednesday, citing legal obstacles rooted in the nation's founding charter.

Speaking to a news channel, Tajani explained that Italy's membership faces a "constitutional barrier" that prevents immediate involvement in the multilateral initiative.

The foreign minister nonetheless signaled Italy's willingness to support reconstruction initiatives across the Middle East.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni previously articulated similar concerns to a broadcaster last month, noting that a "constitutional incompatibility" issue prohibits Italy from joining during the formal signing ceremony.

Meloni identified a "compatibility issue" between the board's governing framework and Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, "under which we can cede parts of our sovereignty only on conditions of equality among states" to international organizations aimed at ensuring peace and justice. She contended that the board does not satisfy these constitutional requirements.

On January 22, diplomatic representatives from 19 nations formally endorsed the Charter of the Board of Peace during parallel sessions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Board of Peace emerged from diplomatic efforts to achieve peaceful resolution in the Gaza Strip. Washington has indicated that additional member states have subsequently joined the framework.

A leader-level inaugural session has been scheduled for February 19 in Washington, DC. Uncertainty surrounds whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will participate. Mobilizing financial resources for Gaza's reconstruction is expected to dominate the agenda.
