Italy Rejects Participating in Trump’s Board of Peace
Speaking to a television network, Tajani explained that Italy’s decision stems from a "constitutional barrier.” Despite this stance, he expressed the country’s willingness to assist in rebuilding initiatives across the Middle East.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed this position last month in remarks to a news agency, stating that a "constitutional incompatibility" prevents Italy from participating at this stage, including during the official signing event.
Meloni pointed to a "compatibility issue" between the board’s founding statute and Article 11 of Italy’s Constitution, “under which we can cede parts of our sovereignty only on conditions of equality among states” to international bodies dedicated to safeguarding peace and justice.
She maintained that the current structure of the board does not meet these constitutional requirements.
On Jan. 22, delegates from 19 nations endorsed the Charter of the Board of Peace on the margins of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland.
The Board of Peace was established as part of diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution in the Gaza Strip. US officials have indicated that more countries have subsequently become part of the effort.
